The movie “The Reef” reminded us of a dive trip about 15 years ago from Cairns to the Cod Hole and Lizard Island, there were backpackers scuba diving from many different countries including 4 Japanese backpackers. About the second day into the dive trip they stopped near a sandy cay and two of the Japanese backpackers went to the sand island for a look along with some other backpackers, as they approached the sand cay one of the Japanese guys jumped from the dive tender and landed right on top of a reef shark which was about 350mm in length (I mean I have seen bigger gold fish), anyway the poor startled tiny shark suddenly had this little Japanese foot thrust past its mouth and one of the sharks baby teeth grazed this guys foot – the Japanese backpacker got the shock of his life and everyone else on the dive tender couldn’t speak for laughing, it was a tears rolling down the face moment for us all.
Later after getting back on the dive ship, having dinner and of course a couple of beers, we started hearing loud cheering and the flash of a camera going off, then more cheers and more camera flash, so we go to the bow of the boat (the pointy bit at the front) and there is our Japanese backpacker friend having his photo taken, as all the discussion was in Japanese I asked what all the fuss was about? “He will be a hero in Japan” was the rough translation, “he survive Shark Attack on Great Barrier Reef”, so there you have it, if you want to be a hero in Japan all you have to do is survive a shark attack on the Great Barrier Reef – needless to say it was another great night spent with fellow backpackers in Australia.
